# Contracts

> Write your agreement once as a template, then have clients sign it inside a booking or a proposal.

**Contracts**, under **Studio**, holds your agreement templates. You write a template once. Forge fills in the details for each client, and they sign it as part of booking you or accepting a proposal.

## Write a template

1. Open **Contracts** and choose **New template**. A new one starts with headings for what's included, payment and cancellation, which you can change.
2. Give it a **Template name**.
3. Write the agreement. You can keep it as one piece of text, or split it into clauses, each with a name and what it says.
4. Choose **Save template**.

Edits to a template apply to new sends only. An agreement that has already been sent keeps its own frozen copy.

### Merge fields

Merge fields fill themselves in for each client. The editor lists them as chips you can click. Each is a name in double curly brackets:

| Field | Becomes |
| --- | --- |
| {{client_name}} | The client's name |
| {{client_email}} | The client's email |
| {{host_name}} | Your name |
| {{proposal_title}} | The proposal's title, or the event type's title in a booking |
| {{total}} | The total price. On a free event type it reads "no charge" |
| {{valid_until}} | The proposal's **Open until** date. In a booking it is left as a dash |
| {{today}} | The date the agreement is prepared |

A field Forge does not recognise is left exactly as you typed it, so check the preview before you send.

## Use a template in a booking

Attach an agreement to an event type and every booker signs it before the booking is confirmed.

1. Open the event type.
2. Under **Agreement**, pick the template in **Booking agreement**.
3. Save.

It works on free and paid event types. The booker reads the agreement, ticks that they agree, and types their full name to sign. On a paid event type they sign before they pay.

## Use a template in a proposal

In the proposal editor, pick the template under **The agreement**. The client signs when they accept. See [Proposals](https://docs.forge.page/proposals).

## How signing works

Signing is a typed signature. The client types their full name, and it must match the name on the booking or proposal.

Before they sign, Forge shows them a statement that typing their name counts as their electronic signature, with the same effect as signing on paper.

For each signature Forge records the signer's name and email, the typed signature, the time, and the IP address and browser it came from.

> The starter template is a starting point, not legal advice. Forge collects the signature and keeps the record. It does not check your terms. If you are unsure whether your agreement says what you need it to, ask a solicitor.

## Where signed copies live

- **You**: open the booking and find **Signed agreement**, or open the proposal and choose **Download PDF**. A client's record lists their signed agreements under **Contracts**.
- **Your client**: they can download their signed agreement from the booking confirmation page, and it is attached to their confirmation email. For a proposal, they get a signed copy by email and can download a PDF from the proposal page.

The **Contracts** page also shows what is **Awaiting signature**.

## Delete a template

Choose **Delete template**. Agreements already sent keep their own frozen copy. This only removes the template for future sends.
